Why Drawing & Coloring Support Emotional Health

Drawing, doodling and coloring aren't just fun, they can be therapeutic. Research shows that coloring can promote mindfulness and reduce stress by helping participants focus on the present moment, calm the nervous system, and detach from ruminative thoughts. Drawing and creative art activities have also been shown to improve emotional resilience, self-awareness, and support healing after trauma or during times of heightened anxiety.

How to Use Drawing & Coloring in Therapy

  • Start simple: Choose a blank page or tracing sheet to lower frustration and open expression.
  • Introduce prompts: "Draw how you felt today," or "Color a shape that shows your worry"
  • Follow with reflection: Ask about the image: “What part is the busy mind?”, “What color shows calm for you?”
  • Encourage completion: A finished piece brings closure; sometimes it’s okay if it’s left open for next time.
  • Incorporate into sessions or groups: Set a 10-20 minute art block, then share or process in small group or one-on-one format.
  • Use as a coping tool: Encourage clients to use coloring or drawing as a self-regulation strategy when upset or restless.

Check out our art therapy books for more activity ideas and prompts. Make sure to keep an assortment of art supplies on hand for these activities: crayons, markers, pens, etc. We have everything you need in stock and ready to ship.
