Description:

The Penalty Box is an innovative, hands-on parenting tool, designed by a child psychologist, to help parents redirect their kids or their own anger in a way that is proactive and fun.  When tempers flare, someone calls a "penalty" and the person who yelled, randomly draws a card from the Penalty Box, and follows the instructions on the card.

The cards include three categories of research based anger management strategies (52 cards in all- 30 anger management activities, 10 chores and 12 blank cards for families to brainstorm their own ideas).  Guidelines as well as a family contract are included.

The Penalty Box can be especially useful if you have a family member who has ADHD, Anxiety, or Autism, or someone who struggles with expressing anger in healthy ways.  Designed for use with school age to adult. Laughter has the power to transcend anger!

We are on our third week of penalty box. So far, meltdowns have decreased, all family members are on board (watch out, Mom and Dad, the kiddos are waiting to catch you and call "penalty box!"), and we are seeing increased self regulation across the board. Of course the first week was full of training to successfully incorporate the strategy. Our kids are young--4, 6 and 9. However, anger is recognized by all. My oldest was happy to show it to her counselor today. I'd buy it again and again. Anger is a tough cookie and this provides a way to calm down, especially for those kids who are oppositional. The cards rule it, not a parent. Today, I handed the penalty box to my daughter without a word. She took the card, read it, and then proceeded to complete the activity before resuming her schoolwork in a calm manner. What a gift as a parent!
