Teletherapy

Telehealth can be used successfully with play therapy. We have gathered some resources and inspiration for you.

Sand Tray Therapy

Yes, it is possible to continue with sand tray therapy while doing telehealth. While there are no ideal situations outside of your playroom, play therapists are resourceful! If you are able to continue using your playroom, you can show your client your minis and they will tell use which pieces to use for you to build their world. This video may be helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQC7KANay8w

Another option is to provide for your clients miniature sets for them to use in their own home. We've put together sets of minis and a personal wooden tray for your clients to use at home while doing teletherapy. You may ask your clients to add Lego® pieces, items from nature, or make their own minis. You may be surprised as the resourcefulness of your clients. These pieces will build a firm foundation for your clients to continue expressing themselves through sand tray therapy.

Maintain Rituals

Whether you started every session with a high five, parent check-in, or a short activity, keep it up! This will provide familiarity and predictability to children; something we all need right now. Or, begin a new ritual while you're doing tele play therapy. This may be checking in on the client's pet, start each session pretending to blow bubbles (or really blow them), or show the child a view of your playroom each time.

Engage the Caregivers

What a wonderful time to use parents and caregivers more in the therapeutic process. Therapies such as Filial Therapy and Theraplay may be especially helpful. Parents may have more time right now and can join in virtual therapy with you. You can also offer tips to caregivers on maintaining routines, building attachment, and decreasing anxiety.

Think like Mr. Rogers

It's time to think like Mr. Rogers! Puppets are very useful for virtual play therapy. Between sessions, you can ask the child to make a puppet out of a sock or a bag to talk back to your puppet. Together you can tell stories via the puppets, ask questions, be silly, and play.

Use the puppets to normalize common feelings during the COVID-19 crisis. "Mr. Elephant is missing his friends right now. He feels really sad and lonely". Ask Mr. Elephant what he has been up to. Mr. Elephant may respond "having a dance party with my family every night after dinner". Some of our more popular puppets:
